Celebrating the Holidays Safely: ‘Tis the Season for a Little Creativity

November 20, 2020 By //  by Brian Douglas Leave a Comment

This holiday season is definitely going to look a little different, with many of Metro Atlanta’s annual events being cancelled or going virtual. But don’t despair! You and your loved ones can still have a fun and safe holiday season. You may even create your own new traditions this year. Here’s a list of local events that will help get you in the holiday spirit this December. Be sure to check with the individual organizers for any last-minute updates.

Garden Lights, Holidays Nights

Every year, the Atlanta Botanical Garden transforms into a winter wonderland of twinkle light displays and electrifying musical performances. From now through January 16, visitors can enjoy the light shows and sample some holiday favorites. Specifically for 2020, the garden is limiting its guest capacity for each night, so everyone can have a socially-distanced experience. But with a limited number of tickets, the spots are starting to sell out – so make your reservations soon and begin planning a fun, holiday-themed evening for you and your loved ones. www.AtlantaBG.org .

Lights of LIFE

Life University hosts one of the most popular light shows in the Southeast, with more than 500,000 people driving through the illuminated campus each year. Lights of LIFE features a 1.5-mile stretch of seasonal sights (which change every year, making each visit a unique experience). Cars, vans, and even buses are invited to cruise through and see the spectacular holiday displays. There will also be pony rides, train rides, and a petting zoo. Lights of LIFE is open daily through December 31; the displays open at sunset. www.Life.edu/lights-of-life

Indie Craft Experience

Have a friend or family member who’s difficult to shop for? Are you looking for the perfect present for your loved one? Be sure to check out the Indie Craft Experience, a unique Atlanta shopping event. Each year, dozens of vendors (jewelry, woodworking, metalworking, glass treasures, bath and body, prints, baked goods, toys) gather for a day of fun-filled, holiday-themed shopping. This year, you can shop from the comfort of your own home. The marketplace is going digital, with crafters sharing pictures and details of their handmade treasures, with links to their online shops. The Indie Craft Experience “Shop in Place” event will be December 5, 2:00-5:00 pm. www.ICE-Atlanta.com .

Skate the Sky

If ice skating is your favorite holiday tradition, glide on over to the Roof at Ponce City Market to “Skate the Sky.” On this 3,500-square-foot ice rink, guests can enjoy some socially-distanced skate time. Ponce City Market has also built private igloos so that you and your friends or loved ones can have a worry-free holiday beverage or snack. Skate the Sky is open now through January 10. Reservations are required. www.PonceCityRoof.com .

A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play

From December 4-23, the Alliance Theater will be taking over Georgia State University’s Summerhill Lot for a live-action version of A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play. The area outside the GSU Stadium will transform into a drive-in theater, complete with a large stage and big screens. Guests can tune into the show via their car radio. Capacity will be limited to allow for social distancing between vehicles.
